International knowledge exchange for stronger refugee protection
We exchange knowledge and experience with organisations and experts in other countries to strengthen refugee protection. Through international knowledge exchange, we learn from each other’s practice, explore shared challenges and develop solutions together.
Asylum and migration policies do not stop at national borders. Developments in one European country can affect refugees and organisations elsewhere. At the same time, laws, political contexts and day-to-day practices differ from country to country. By sharing these different experiences, organisations can better understand what works, identify emerging risks and learn which approaches may also be useful in other contexts.
Sharing knowledge
International knowledge exchange is a two-way process. We share the knowledge and experience we have built up in the Netherlands, while also learning from partners, civil society organisations, experts and refugee-led organisations in other countries. This way, we bring together knowledge from different countries and areas of expertise.
We do this, for example, through:
expert meetings and conferences;
training sessions and workshops;
peer exchange between professionals and organisations;
joint research and discussions;
reports, toolkits and other knowledge products.
From practical experience to shared solutions
Many organisations supporting refugees face similar questions. How can access to protection and legal assistance be safeguarded? How should organisations respond to changes in European asylum policy? How can civil society organisations remain resilient when the space in which they operate is under pressure? And how can refugees themselves have meaningful influence on policies and decisions that affect them?
By comparing experiences across countries, we can recognise patterns earlier and learn from the solutions developed by others. We use these insights to improve our own work and that of our partners, and to strengthen joint advocacy at national and European level.

Making knowledge available to others
We want the insights generated through international cooperation to reach beyond the people and organisations directly involved in an exchange.
Where possible, we therefore make the results available to other civil society organisations, professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders. We share knowledge through outcome papers, research reports, handbooks, toolkits and other publications.
This allows lessons from practice to be used by a wider network of organisations and professionals working to strengthen refugee protection.
