Step Up project: a broader foundation for fundraising in Italy

With a team of volunteers and activists from different countries, the Italian NGO Porco Rosso helps refugees and asylum seekers with advice during their asylum procedure. In doing so, they use a network of lawyers, healthcare specialists, trade unions and other care providers.

How do we work together?

The Step Up Fund supports Porco Rosso in developing a broader foundation for fundraising, building relationships with institutional funds and identifying potential grant applications. This allows the organization to improve the quality and quantity of aid provided to migrants and refugees.

What does Porco Rosso do?

Porco Rosso brings together refugees and asylum seekers together with lawyers, helping them to follow administrative and legal procedures. The NGO also advises them on medical, social and work-related issues.

Background

Between 2014 and 2015, more than 600,000 refugees and migrants arrived in Italy after crossing the Mediterranean. Agreements between Italy and Lebanon have resulted in less successful crossings, closing of shelters, reduction of language classes and little access to health checks.

Due to the reduced number of refugees and migrants in previous years, many NGOs and international organizations have focused their work on other issues. Local organizations have been left behind with more work pressure and more cutbacks.
