Step Up project: a place for young people in Greece

Velos Youth Center is a Greek non-profit that helps unaccompanied minor refugees and migrants to rebuild their lives in Greece. With the Step Up Fund, DCR supports the organisation in further developing their monitoring, evaluation and learning. The goal is to see what works and what doesn’t, and how the organisation can scale up its work to ultimately help more young people.

What does Velos Youth Center do?

Velos Youth Center was founded in 2017 and hosts activities in and around their facility in Athens. Unaccompanied migrants between the ages of 16 and 23 can visit the centre for support ranging from basic facilities like showers and a place to do laundry to job search advice, safe accommodation, and legal and psychological help.

Workshops and activities help these young migrants grow and learn. An example is the ‘Young People’s Blog’ where they share their experiences with building new lives.

Background

Velos is a place where vulnerable young people can come together in Athens. There is little attention and help focused on this group, especially those aged 18 and older, so they often must manage on their own.
