International project: a database to help more people in Cyprus

18.000 asylum applications and only 4 asylum lawyers on the entire island: that is the situation in Cyprus. Our partner the Cyprus Refugee Council (CyRC) does what it can to provide the best possible assistance to asylum seekers and vulnerable groups. Now, with our help, they are developing a new database to better help even more people.

This new, highly secured database enables CyRC to better capture information about their clients so they can help them more quickly. The database also helps identify patterns and obstacles encountered by asylum seekers and refugees.

The information from the new database will also allow CyRC to better advocate for the interests of asylum seekers and refugees in Cyprus.

How do we work together?

The Dutch Council for Refugees supports CyRC, financially and with expertise, in developing this database to collect and process information more efficiently. It lets them generate reports and statistics to develop activities for the target group, while taking into account the highest standards of privacy.

What does the Cyprus Refugee Council do?

The Cyprus Refugee Council (CyRC) is committed to protecting and supporting vulnerable groups in Cyprus. The organization helps refugees, asylum seekers and victims of human smuggling and trafficking. They also support the integration of newcomers into society.

CyRC offers legal, social and psychosocial support. They work hard to improve migration policy and its implementation, in line with international and European legislation.

Background

Within the EU, Cyprus has the most asylum applications per capita; in 2021 there were more than 18,000 pending applications on a population of 1.2 million. There is a huge backlog in processing these applications. Refugees often have to wait years for to get clarity on their application. There is also little legal support available except for  what CyRC is able to offer, and reception facilities are lacking.
