Displacement from Ukraine: DCR supports local NGOs

Over 14 million people have fled their homes since the war started in Ukraine. About 6 million have left the country. Poland hosts over 3.3 million refugees, Hungary more than 610,000. The Dutch Council for Refugees (DCR) supports local organisations in Ukraine’s neighbouring countries, such as the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, by sharing expertise and financial resources.

Capacity building in times of war

With DCR’s support, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee can provide legal assistance, especially to vulnerable groups. They can also invest in training staff and volunteers at other organisations and NGOs to provide correct legal and other information to Ukrainian refugees. The Hungarian Helsinki Committee is also involved in monitoring the situation and providing multilingual information.

Fast response

'The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has been working for the rights of refugees for decades. When the war in Ukraine started, we had to respond quickly. We provide information and legal assistance to the thousands of refugees who arrive each day,’ said Anikó Bakonyi, Senior Program Officer of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee.

The lack of a functioning asylum system means that refugee aid is left to NGOs and volunteers. We would not be able to continue our activities without the flexible support and funding we receive.
