Step Up project: training volunteers in Italy

ENGIM Internazionale is an Italian NGO that organises short- and long-term volunteer programmes in Italy and other countries. They promote vocational education with the goal of improving living and working conditions for youth and adults. Together with the Step Up Fund, they develop training courses to improve volunteers’ knowledge about asylum seekers, refugee rights and asylum legislation. This helps volunteers better understand and serve this target group.

What does ENGIM do?

In 2005, ENGIM opened a Center for Solidarity and Inclusion (CSI) that is staffed by paid employees and volunteers. The CSI focuses on integrating refugees and asylum seekers through activities such as offering training courses about employment, making internships more accessible, and providing information about rights and duties in Italy.

In addition, they offer support for the renewal of residence permits and applications for citizenship, and they offer legal assistance with family reunification.

Background

Changing policies and shrinking budgets for integrating refugees and migrants have led to an increasing reliance on NGOs to offer integration and legal aid activities. Because these organisations depend largely on volunteers and financial support from individuals, it is not always possible to provide the right support to the target group.
